Chaucer wrote The Canterbury Tales during the late 14th century, a time of significant social, political, and religious change. The Black Death (the plague) had recently swept through Europe, drastically reducing the population and shifting the social structure. This led to a greater fluidity in social mobility, which Chaucer explores by depicting characters from different walks of life.
